Black Mirror’s “15 Million Merits” left me particularly unfulfilled, yet I strangely felt that my hour on the telly was well worth it. A lot of the questions it asked, like in oyxmoronic “celebrity culture”, what personality suicide is one willing to commit for fame? Or the fleeting promises of a better life that really isn’t?
I found a lot of the absurdities to hit close to home — like the exaggerated prevalence of recommendation systems for banal things (“you like apples, you may also like bananas!”). I agree with the damage widespread cynicism does to our understanding of what is “real”, altho this ep failed to address the subtle nuance of things that are “virtual” but generate powerful emotions and drive the human spirit. It’s problematic if that chain reaction doesn’t happen.
Linked is a profound analysis.
