Oh, transience.
A creative situation is never optimal. But you get closer by acting. Go back a few decades, and painstaking constraints look like solitary confinement compared to today’s vast palette of nonlinear tools — on the other hand, now the time isn’t so much spent doing things manually, but diving into the seas of what you have and making choices. (For fellow synth geeks, I reckon my plugin...

I repeat and expand: “No one wants to hear about what you had for lunch today!” in response to tweets and Facebook updates is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. It completely misses the point that said lunch-poster now has a record of what they ate, so if they really liked it, they can remember to have it later (and if it sucked, they’ll stay away in the future)....

– -Dr. Piers Steel That’s funny. Sometimes to make tasks more fun, I imagine that there’s a superior version of me from a parallel universe and he’s crossing over to kill me and take over my life if I’m not ready — meaning I have to develop my skills, should that day ever...

For awhile, I’ve asked myself: “How can you tell which reporters know math?” Command of the English language and scaling figures aren’t necessarily mutually inclusive. Turns out there’s a simple test in recent days: check out everyone who’s reporting on the iPad 2 and see if they refer to 2048x1536 as being “quadruple” or “double” the...

They were supposed to be the perfect pet. When their existence became known to us, we couldn’t resist their cuteness. It seemed a little strange that they were found amidst an abandoned civilization that these simple creatures couldn’t have possibly created. We imported our newfound pets to the homeworld and business boomed, revitalizing our flagging economy. Billions of us,...

Ah, Transformers music. To think the theme by Anne Bryant was founded on a basis of polyrhythmic jazz, which is one reason why it’s so damn catchy.

There are times when despite having a train of thought traveling on the tip of your tongue and not knowing how to fully describe said train, you need to capture it nonetheless. This allows you to look back and reexamine it at your leisure, which may be enough to expose detailed observations you originally missed. I always appreciate when I’m enjoying a post somewhere and some savvy...

Eventually, I got old, and realized all of my friends had died. I marveled at how some of us were able to sustain a normal life (with its troubles mundane and great) at all, and remembered — for this moment — the clasp of aurelics I’d placed in a cupboard, only to be used at a time like this. I read the inspiring tales of the beauteous pioneers, the conflicting philosophies of industry-city...
